Criminal investigations
HMRC has significant powers when undertaking a criminal investigation with a view to prosecution. This includes powers of arrest, search warrants, seizing property and interviews. For more serious crimes, they can use intrusive surveillance powers including interception of communication.
Once HMRC has conducted a criminal investigation, they refer to the Crown Prosecution Service who decides whether to proceed with criminal prosecution.
