COVID-19: What to do if you've overclaimed through the coronavirus job retention scheme

April Foster

HMRC have updated their guidance on how to report and pay back any money overclaimed through the coronavirus job retention scheme grant.

If you have more claims to make under the scheme you can adjust your next claim for the overclaim.  You should indicate on the portal form that this claim includes an adjustment for a previous overclaim.  Your net payment for the claim month will be reduced by the overclaim and you will receive the net amount.

If you have no more claims to make, then you need obtain a payment reference via your government gateway account, before making a payment to HMRC.

Please note that HMRC can issue penalties if you haven't repaid a grant that you have over claimed within their time scales; so it's best to get this sorted sooner rather than later.

If you’ve overclaimed a grant and have not repaid it, you must notify HMRC by the latest of either:
  • 90 days after the date you received the grant you were not entitled to
  • 90 days after the date you received the grant that you were no longer entitled to keep because your circumstances changed
  • 20 October 2020
