COVID-19: New support measures announced

COVID-19: New support measures announced

Mohamed Mavani

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced more government support provided for businesses most impacted by the rising number of Coronavirus cases in the UK.

Hospitality & leisure sectors
Hospitality and leisure businesses such as pubs, restaurants, cinemas and theatres will be able to apply for one-off grants of up to £6,000 per premises.  The amount of grant available is varied by the rateable value of each eligible premises.

Rateable value £0-15k £15k-51k >£51k
Value of grant available £2.7k £4k £6k

The Government recognise that this is one of the most profitable times of the year in the hospitality trade, with businesses reporting that they have lost 40%-60% of their December trade due to the large amount of coronavirus cases currently sweeping the UK.

How to claim
The Government have said that the grants will be administered by local authorities in the coming weeks.

Support for other businesses
To support other businesses impacted by Omicron (such as those who supply the hospitality and leisure sectors), the government has announced an additional boost of more than £100million for the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG).  Local Authorities will have the discretion to allocate this funding to businesses most in need.

Statutory Sick Pay
With the rising number of coronavirus cases meaning more employees will need to take time off work, the Government is reintroducing the Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme.  This means that businesses with fewer than 250 employees can claim the cost of statutory sick pay for up to two weeks for Covid-related absences.

Culture Recovery Fund
There will be a further £30 million of funding made available through the Culture Recovery Fund to help theatres and museums.  Again, no specific details on how to claim the funding have been provided yet, only that further details on how organisations can access funding will be set out in due course.
